A shrimp boat was caught red-handed

A shrimp boat was caught while it was trawling fishing at the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge.

The staff from the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) and the National Coast Guard Service managed to intercept Monarca and Ana Lourdes ships.

The shelter, along with that of Caletas and Ostional, as well as Las Baulas National Marine Park, protect the nesting of sea turtles, endangered species.

After the arrest, an assessment of the environmental damage is underway.

This assessment includes 271 kg of different species of fish, sharks, rays and many marine invertebrates, which are called accompanying fauna, because they were not the original target, as well as 48 kilos of shrimp and 27.5 kilos of red porgy.

There were also 79 porgies below the minimum size. This fish is one of the main target species of artisanal fishermen in the area, who are directly affected by this illegal activity.
