A third of the complaints to the OIJ reached the Public Prosecutor’s Office

From January to December 2016, the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) received more than 90,000 complaints of different types of crimes.

These allegations represent cases related to fraud, crimes against life, among others. However, most of them answered property crimes, such as theft of a cellphone.

Of these complaints, 29,727 cases went to the Public Ministry, which represents 33.3% of effectiveness.

Walter Espinoza, general director of the OIJ, welcomed this figure, and indicated that it represents the effective action of the entity.

However, Espinoza also acknowledged that they don’t have cross information on how many of these cases came to the establishment of a penalty, a figure they should know.

In addition, Espinoza reported that most police operations, such as monitoring and surveillance, were conducted for drug related activities.

Of the 5,564 operations, 946 were related to drugs, 742 to assaults, 434 to vehicle theft and 237 to homicide.
