Security Minister Gustavo Mata said that Costa Rica needs 18,000 more police officers to fight crime and citizens feel safe.
According to Mata, in order to have more officers on the streets, that’s the ideal amount.
After obtaining 25 billion colones from the Legislative Assembly for the hiring of 1,500 police officers, the total number of officers in the country would amount to 15,700.

It would require 2,300 more police officers to reach the ideal number wanted by the Minister. Therefore, he sent a message to the legislators to manage a higher security budget.
300 new recruits will enter the academy to train as officers. The goal is that every 3 months, 300 new students enter and in that way, by August the country would have already recruited the ideal number.
