Nowadays, more than three thousand Africans are located in the two main borders of Costa Rica: Paso Canoas in the south, and Peñas Blancas in the north. They intended to cross the border to the United States but they can’t do so since 90% of them don’t have legal documents. This was announced by the minister of communications, Mauricio Herrera, who argued that despite the efforts made by Costa Rica, the future is uncertain.
It is not possible to give Africans the same attention that Cubans received, because Africans entered Costa Rica irregularly, without identification documents. There is an American law regarding Cubans, who also had their passports. It is also difficult for newcomers to cross the Nicaraguan border because of the army located there. We are avoiding a conflict due to international laws,
said Herrera.
The Foreign Ministry is looking for a solution that benefits everyone, but so far, the only solution for African migrants is to return to their countries.
On Tuesday, migrants tried to block Peñas Blancas border. Security Forces officers keep watching newcomers to avoid any approach towards Nicaraguan army.
