The agricultural sector grouped in the National Agricultural Alliance (ANA) sent a letter to President Luis Guillermo Solís expressing its opposition to the inclusion of Costa Rica in the Pacific Alliance.
ANA also stated its separation from the Business Council of the Pacific Alliance (CEAP), a group made up of nine chamber sectors: industrial, export, trade and information technology, among others.
Employers indicated that they would favor an invitation to the agricultural sector. However, Juan Rafael Lizano, president of the National Chamber of Agriculture and Agribusiness (CNAA), believes there will be no approach.
ANA insisted that, for the agro-industrial sector, the damage arising from a possible inclusion in the bloc will be much greater than the few and alleged benefits to be received.
The group includes the interest of the CNAA, the Union of Small and Medium National Farmers (UPANACIONAL), the National Council of Cooperatives (COONACOOP) and the Union of Independent Producers of Various Activities (UPIAV).
