Through a call center, six subjects tricked one thousand elderly people telling them they could win the prize of a national lottery.
In total, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) arrested five Americans who lived in the country and conducted the fraud.
According to Wálter Espinoza, director of the OIJ, the scam is close to $ 9 million.
The subjects named Stephen, Gavin, Harold, Sniffen and Dino, were arrested in Pavas, León XIII, Escazú and Pérez Zeledón. They will be extradited.
A woman named Mommers remains on the run and is wanted by international authorities.
The scams occurred between 2010 and 2014 and a trial is currently under way in North Carolina.
They are all Americans and because of a cultural and language issue they managed to make commit the crime,”
said Espinoza.
