On Tuesday, Costa Rican Vice President Ana Helena Chacón announced her candidacy as executive director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), replacing the late Nigerian doctor Babatunde Osotimehi.
Chacón, a specialist in international relations, is the coordinator of the social policies of the Costa Rican government, and in the past she worked as Deputy Minister of Security and as a legislator.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will be in charge of choosing the new UNFPA chief.
This UN agency works on a broad agenda that includes sexual and reproductive health, youth, gender and disability.
