According to the results of the 2015 Provision of Health Services’ (EPSS) evaluation, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund exceeded its own expectations and improved screening and care of anemia in children.
The percentage of anemia cases being addressed went from 26% to 43%, which represented 14,138 children between 6 months and less than one year old diagnosed with anemia.
As reported by the CCSS in a press release, 109,843 children of that age were treated at the primary care level, reaching 70% of screening.
The evaluation highlighted Brunca and Chorotega regions with the largest institutional achievements in hemoglobin screening.
The iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency in the world population. Small children, pregnant women and women in postpartum period are the most vulnerable population groups.
