At the end of July, legislators approved the law against animal abuse which stipulates jail punishments for offenders.
However, the law was sent for consultation to the Constitutional Chamber and it will read for a second time. Nevertheless, cases of animal abuse continue, according to Leticia Méndez, representative of Rescate Animal.
For instance, there is a case that was filed on Tuesday in Alajuelita and it was shared on Rescate Animal Facebook page. The case was reported by a user named Soto, who related that the fact occurred in El Llano de Alajuelita.
The dog was tied up in the backyard and someone took advantage that its owner was not there to hurt it. Fortunately, some neighbors noticed this, and alerted its owner who helped it,
explained Méndez.
In recent weeks, other cases of abused animals have been reported. One of them was Duke’s case: it was attacked with a machete and it lost its snout.
In Cártago, there was another case: a dog was beaten and kept in the house without being assisted. The animal had wounds on the snout. it is thought that they were made with machetes, knives, sticks or shovels.
According to the activist, nothing has changed and they keep receiving more than 300 emails from people asking for help.
