All indications are that the bill against animal abuse will be approved in coming days.
Juan Carlos Peralta, president of the Asociación para el Bienestar y Amparo Animal (ABAA), who participates in legislative readings, said that the legislative committee agreed on Thursday to facilitate the project’s approval next Tuesday.
However, they are still suspicions of any unconstitutional actions that may be filed by opposing legislators, like the libertarian Otto Guevara.
Nevertheless, the bench said they would withdraw any obstacles to the project.
The use of animals for consumption (like cattle) would be included by a motion.
We have no problems with that, it can be included as long as this is regulated with guidelines from the Ministry of Health or the National Animal Health Service (SENASA),”
said Peralta.
In March, the TSE confirmed they had ¢ 2.470 million to address a possible referendum on the bill against animal abuse.
ABAA, on the other hand, collected the signatures of 160,000 Costa Ricans to back the initiative.
The plan calls for prison terms of between one and three years for those who cause the death of animals without a legitimate cause, and for those who poison, run over, injure, attack or torture animals.
