The anti-corruption unit of the prosecutor’s office on Thursday raided the historic National Palace of Guatemala, where several government offices operate, for a complaint that was not disclosed, reported the Public Ministry on Thursday.
We are developing an investigation with the authorization of a competent judge in the National Palace of Culture,”
Estuardo Campos, head of the Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption, told reporters during the search of the building in downtown Guatemala City.
Campos did not respond questions about the institutions raided inside the National Palace, a museum that also houses an office of the president and offices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency.
The raid on the National Palace takes place on the eve of the general elections on June 16th, which have the fight against corruption as one of the main issues among the candidates.
Guatemala experienced a political crisis in 2015 with the resignation of then President Otto Pérez (2012-2015), appointed to lead a multi-million dollar fraud at the customs. The election that year was won by the television personality Jimmy Morales, whose government has also been overshadowed by corruption.
