Yesterday, the Portuguese António Guterres took office as the new Secretary General of the United Nations. Guterres will replace the Sout Korean Ban Ki-moon next January 1st.
I, António Guterres, do solemnly swear to exercise in all loyalty, discretion and conscience, the functions entrusted to me as secretary general of the United Nations,”
said the former prime minister of Portugal before the plenary of the General Assembly.
Guterres, who worked as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015, was elected last October by the 193 Member States to be the ninth leader of the international organization.
