Assault behind Italian crime: gang would be linked with more cases

The first reports of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) suggest that an assault would be the main cause behind the death of Italian businessman, Stefano Calandrelli. The OIJ links the case to a gang that would be linked with more assaults and kidnappings in the country during the last months.

A woman named Smith is investigated for this and other cases and, according to Walter Espinoza, director of the OIJ, she would be the last person to have seen the businessman alive. Last Friday, the authorities raided the house that Smith rented in San Joaquín de Flores, Heredia, and through a test of luminol confirmed the presence of blood as well as other important evidence.

The woman is 24 years old and has been arrested since Saturday in Limón.

The OIJ had been analyzing the temporary disappearance of people with a common element: apparently Mrs. Smith,”

explained Espinoza.

The police chief explained that they were monitoring the house of Smith and in some of her garbage bags they found clothes with blood as well as some glasses of the Italian who disappeared on May 14th.

At the moment, the OIJ has arrested five people linked to the crime: two women named Smith and Vega; and three men with the named Mckenzie, Cerdas, and Ríos.
