Authorities remain vigilant against crack

After confiscating a historical amount of crack stones, the national authorities remain vigilant against the vulnerability of young people in high-risk areas.

In 2016, security authorities seized more than 210 thousand crack stones and they have a zero tolerance policy, especially because of the effects that this drug causes in people.

One of the strongest problematic is that it’s sold in the bunkers of the neighborhoods and the cost is around one thousand colones per dose, but another aspect that causes concern is the lack of general knowledge about its effects.

Cocaine-crack increases blood pressure and heart rate to levels that can lead to strokes. Compulsive use causes the heart to grow, leading to heart failure,”

said Luisa Oviedo, a doctor at the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (IAFA).

According to the specialist, the crack takes minutes to reach the brain and causes an explosion of dopamine release.

This effect lasts seconds so it is followed by the immediate need to obtain more, affecting the person’s judgment… Despite the risk of death, they continue to consume,”

added Oviedo.
