In Brazil everyone wants blond, light-eyed children. That is why that country became one of the main destinations for semen from the United States.
Last year Brazilians bought 500 semen pipes compared to the 16 bought in 2011, according to The Wall Street Journal. The health authorities report an increase of 2,500% of the import.
This situation suggests that in this Latin American country there are more and more single women or lesbian couples with money but it also reveals the very specific profile for children: blond, with light eyes and preferably with freckles. In other words, the whitest child possible.
This occurs in a country where blacks are a numerical majority (51% of the population) and an economic minority, so being white is the symbol of status.
The Brazilian health organization, ANVISA, explained that of all the sperm samples that Brazilians bought from the United States between 2014 and 2016, 95.4% came from white men; 51.8% had blue eyes; and 63.5% brown hair.
