Budget for roads approved

On June 29th, the Committee on Financial Affairs of the Legislative Assembly approved a second special budget, which includes 20,257 million colones for municipalities’ road network maintenance.

The budget must be exclusively used for road improvement and restoration and if there is any money left, it has to be used for road works.

President of the legislative body, Christian socialist Rosibel Ramos, said several parties had to pressure the government to approve the budget and meet Transferencia de Competencias a las Municipalidades Law regulations.

According to Michael Arce, member of Partido de liberación Nacional (PLN), this regulation has been delayed in several occasions. The legislator criticized the Executive branch because it presented the budget almost 6 months after the law came into force.

Arce explained that municipalities should present their budgets within the next two months to meet the deadlines set by the General Comptroller of the Republic.
