CANATUR asks businessmen to increase security to protect tourists

After the murder of a Venezuelan tourist, which has affected the image of the country, the National Chamber of Tourism called on the private sector to increase security measures in their businesses to protect the tourists who visit the country.

The entity sent this message at the beginning of the high season, when the arrival of international tourists to Costa Rica increases, as well as the trips of national tourists within the country.

We want it to be a very positive season, with a calm atmosphere and without regretting new aggressions against tourists. It is now when we must double our efforts, increase the levels of security in our businesses, be open to tourists and warn them of possible risks and dangers, and offer them advice that will help them avoid unfortunate situations. We are the main responsible of providing a pleasant and quality experience in the country,”

said the president of CANATUR, Sary Valverde.

The president mentioned that the issue of security is a shared responsibility, “on the one hand, it is the responsibility of the public sector to guarantee a safe State, but also of the private sector, because we are the ones who develop the activity and we are in direct contact with the visitor,” added Valverde.

She asked the responsible and competent entities to reinforce the operations and expand the police presence in the most conflictive areas and the main tourist centers during the high season.

Valverde explained that

(…) improving security standards is much more than the need for a union, it’s about the needs of more than 200 thousand families living from our sector. We can only achieve the best quality of tourism experiences and the sustainable development of tourism with the joint action of the public and private sectors and the involvement and the cooperation of the citizens.”
