Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles denounced that he was beaten by National Guard troops when he was leaving due to tear gas use from Monday’s protest against President Nicolás Maduro.

GNB troops ambushed us in Las Mercedes (eastern Caracas) when we were leaving. We were robbed and beaten, all my team is wounded,”

said Capriles after the mobilization that tried to reach the Ombudsman’s Office, but was dispersed with tear gas pumps, water jets and pellets.

Capriles team reported that the military beat him with a helmet and with fists on his face, which caused an injury to the left cheek.

Thousands of opponents marched on Monday in Caracas in what they defined as the beginning of a stage of increased pressure against Maduro and his call for a Constituent Assembly.
