Once again Costa Rica stands out at a regional level, as it is the only country in Central America that has a place to give special attention to stray dogs, while educating about animal welfare.
About 15 minutes from the ruins of Cartago, near the industrial park Z, the Municipal Center for Animal Care Education (CMECA) stands proud.
The short-term objective of the center is to improve the quality of life of these animals. The medium- term goal is to reduce the number of stray dogs as much as possible.
CMECA removes fleas, ticks, cures diseases, vaccinate and sterilize the dogs. Then they are put up for adoption. If in 15 days they did not find a home they are returned where they were found.

said Rolando Rodríguez, mayor of Cartago.
The Center also operates as a school to educate about animal welfare. As of March this year, 427 people participated in workshops on pet care.

added Mayor Rodríguez.
