CCSS will use drug money to treat addictions

On Tuesday morning, after an alliance with the Costa Rican Institute on Drugs (ICD), the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) announced that it will use 500 million colones that belonged to drug trafficking to strengthen care services for people with addictions in the country.

With the money, the CCSS will propose a project for the detection of people consuming psychoactive substances in the emergency services of national hospitals. In addition, the resources will be used for the remodeling of a specialized area of the Manuel Antonio Chapuí Psychiatric Hospital.

Maria Eugenia Villalta, medical manager of the CCSS, said that all the Interdisciplinary Mental Health Teams (EISAM) that are located in Costa Rica will be supported with infrastructure.

Guillermo Araya, director of the ICD, explained that drugs continue to hit the Costa Rican society, so strengthening the treatments are extremely important.

There is an investment of confiscated money and it is returned to the citizenry. The issue of drugs is a Public Health issue,”

said Araya.
