Chancellor defends free movement for African migrants

The chancellor Manuel González denied that the decision to allow free movement to more than 380 African migrants isn’t an easy way out of the problem nor they’re encouraging illegal crossings toward Nicaragua, one of the stops migrants make on their journey to the U.S.

“We aren’t turning a blind eye. We’re simply going through procedures that are within our means and in compliance with legislation”, said the chancellor.

Costa Rica doesn’t have enough resources to take care of these migrants as they recently did with Cubans migrants. In addition the Constitutional Court in many occasions had declared migrants can’t be detained for more than 30 days.

González added that the Government can’t send police after every migrant and also they cannot prevent that migrants decide to stay or go.

Since mid-April this influx of African migrants started to pour into Costa Rican border with Panama.
