Chancellor does not think Nicaragua will pay for the damages on Calero Island

Nicaragua must pay nearly 6 million dollars to Costa Rica as compensation for the environmental damage in Isla Calero. The payment’s deadline is December 16th, but Foreign Minister Manuel González stated that it would be “unreal” to believe that they are going to do it.

It would be a great surprise that would be welcomed, because our interest is that that stage of the process ends so that the only pending issue is the maritime boundaries,”

expressed the Chancellor.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), determined in December 2015 that Costa Rica has sovereignty over the small territory that Nicaragua claimed as its own.

Costa Rica received the approval of the ICJ to carry out a technical study in which environmental damage was determined and a claim involving the payment of 6 million dollars was filed.

Given the little or no possibility of receiving the payment, Costa Rica has all the documentation for the ICJ to establish the amount to be indemnified by Nicaragua.
