After the traffic chaos that took place at General Cañas highway, due to the closure of the road that communicates Alajuela with San José, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) is looking for a way not to repeat this situation.
Minister Carlos Villalta declared that authorities are asking the company in charge of the project to fulfill deliveries according to a schedule, so they have more time to inform about the closure.
Villalta added that the expansion work to 6 lanes of the bridge are made under a very tight schedule and they can’t lose a single day.
The road closure started on December 21st at 6:00 am and it was extended until December 22nd at about the same time. The measure, which was informed with less than 24 hours in advance, generated hundreds of problems to citizens. Many of them complaint about the short time they had to take measures to avoid chaos.
Omar Segura, MOPT spokesman, said that authorities understand people’s anger and although it is a very important road, closures have taken place before without causing such a chaos.
The official added that more closures are expected. As consequence, they are asking the project manager to define whether there will be more closures from December 27th to January 1st in order to inform users in advance. As work progresses on La Platina bridge, MOPT will have to totally or temporarily close the road in both directions. Therefore, authorities are asking people to cooperate with the measures when needed.
