Representatives from different political parties lamented Costa Rican Christiana Figueres’ retirement as candidate to the Secretary-General of the of the United Nations (UN) and they agreed that it was due to geopolitical reasons.
Figueres made the announcement on Monday afternoon at a press conference in the Foreign Ministry, after the negative results in the primary elections.
Congresswoman Maureen Clarke, head of Partido de Liberacion Nacional (PLN), declared that it was “unfortunate” that Costa Rica has failed to get that position.
I think the world is losing the possibility of having a woman like Mrs. Christiana as leader to agree on so many issues that we haven’t discussed,
stated the legislator.
Victor Morales Zapata, from Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), remarked that many people made a effort to drive Figueres’ aspirations.
We hoped that with her prestige and great experience, she could have held the position. However, the reality is different,
declared Morales.
Legislator Gerardo Vargas Rojas, head of Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), said that as Costa Ricans, people would have liked a Costa Rican to be in such an important orgnization.
Frank Camacho, from Frente Amplio, said Christiana Figueres’ retirement was a prudent decision.
Costa Rica has achieved a lot. We were able to reach high-standards politics and the now we know the conditions the country needs to aspire to such positions,
declared the legislator.
