The Inter-American Human Rights Commission (CIDH for its acronym in Spanish) announced that would suspend all visits and hearings scheduled for this year and it could lay off 40% of its personal (30 people) if by July the country members of the Organization of American States (OAS) don’t provide urgent funds to keep functioning.
In order to prevent a “catastrophic situation”, the Commission urges member states, observing countries and any other possible donor to make financial supports to alleviate its extreme budget crisis. It also asks to the OAS to increase its annual endowment, which represents 6% of its budget, about $4.8 million.
The CIDH is hoping the OAS General Assembly, that will gather from June 13 to 15, to adopt important measures to increase its budget.
The commission resources has been reducing in the last few years due to the financial crisis of the OAS, to which its own country members stopped paying, and by cuts in donations from European countries, which are focusing on the Syrian conflict and the refugee crisis.
