City Council created Inter-institutional commission to assess illegal rentals in the South Caribbean

The Chamber of Tourism and Commerce of the South Caribbean went to the Municipal Council of Talamanca with its concern for the illegal house rentals through platforms such as Airbnb.

This group, with the support of the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, the Ministry of Health, the Public Force and the Tourist Police, managed to get the city council to create an inter-institutional commission to assess the actions and address the problem.

In the letter sent to the Municipal Council on December 14th, 2018, they stated once again that last July,

many of the illegal establishments, houses and hotels, were impacted by storms, leaving tourists without any support or help, exposed to huge risks.”

According to a survey carried out by tourist-authorized businessmen in the area, there are at least 450 illegal accommodations that do not have permits or patents. They reiterate to the authorities that these establishments jeopardize Costa Rica’s reputation and also entail other types of consequences.
