The National Commission of Risk Prevention and Emergency Response (CNE), along with with scientific, technical and municipal agencies, maintain surveillance of unstable grounds that threaten important population centers.
In addition, with the support of Japan International Cooperation, they are working to strengthen vulnerable communities.
Studies conducted by the CNE established 8 unstable grounds located in the south-western part of the Great Metropolitan Area. These areas are: Tapezco and Chitaría in Santa Ana, Burío in Aserrí, Tablazo in Desamparados, Ortiga-Potrerillos in Acosta, Pacacua in Mora, La Cascabela in Alajuelita and Agres-Lajas in Escazú.
According to Iván Brenes, CNE president, this surveillance and monitoring plan has helped to launch 3 components: continuous air and ground monitoring of the field, design and implementation of early warning systems and instrumentation that includes training and identification of families at risk conditions.
Brenes mentioned that the CNE is funding academic institutions with the aim of generating a surveillance and monitoring structure.
