Colombia and the United States rejected any participation in the alleged assassination attempt of which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said he was targeted on Saturday in Caracas, an act denounced by allies such as Cuba and Iran.
Maduro, who assured that the attack was carried out with drones loaded with explosives, blamed the events on the
“extreme right wing,” referring to the opposition and the outgoing Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos.
I have no doubt that the name of Juan Manuel Santos is behind this attack,”
said Maduro in a national broadcast on radio and television.
The Colombian government emphatically rejected the accusations of Caracas.
It is already a habit of the Venezuelan president to permanently blame Colombia for any type of situation. We demand respect for President Juan Manuel Santos,”
said the Colombian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Santos will hand over power to right-winger Iván Duque on Tuesday, who also believes Maduro is a dictator.
Washington denied being involved in what happened in Caracas.
I can state categorically that there was absolutely no involvement of the US government in what happened there,”
said Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser John Bolton on Sunday.
According to Maduro, the United States financed the plan.
If the Venezuelan government has solid information that they want to provide and that demonstrates a possible violation of US criminal law, we will take it seriously but, in the meantime, we should concentrate on the corruption and oppression of the regime in Venezuela,”
said Bolton, who added that the incident
could have been many things, even a pretext staged by the regime itself.”
The leader of the ruling Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Raúl Castro, and the country’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel,
vigorously condemned the attempted attack against President Nicolás Maduro,”
according to a tweet from the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
The Spanish government condemned any type of violence with political ends.
Moscow, on the other end, spoke of Maduro’s “assassination attempt,” in a statement from the foreign ministry.
We believe that the use of terrorist methods as a tool for political struggles is categorically unacceptable.”
According to the Russian ministry
it is obvious that such actions are aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country days after the congress of the Socialist Party of Venezuela, which outlined the priority steps that must be taken to restore the national economy.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said this
is a step towards instability and insecurity in Venezuela, which could only have benefited the enemies of the people and the government of the country.”
