Commission approves half of cabinet seats for women

The Women’s Committee of the Legislative Assembly approved a bill that would force the President of the Republic to appoint women in 50% of his cabinet.

This was confirmed by lawmaker Karla Prendas, from the National Liberation Party (PLN), who chairs the legislative panel.

The initiative, led by Epsy Campbell, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC), would also apply to vice ministries, executive presidencies of public institutions and boards of directors.

Campbell explained that in the country there are laws and interpretations of the Constitutional Chamber that compel Congress and municipalities to have mixed cabinets, but not the Executive Branch.

The initiative will now go to the legislative plenary for discussion and voting.
