Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) has promised more than 10,000 inhabitants of Northern Guanacaste that they can expect to have arsenic free water, later this year. A company awarded a contract to build a turbine filtration system is required to deliver plans on the 28th of March, and will have four months to install the system.
Initially the arsenic problem affected 23 communities and a total of 40 thousand people. As of December the problem had been mitigated for 73 percent of those affected. However, problems persist in Bebedero de Cañas; Quintas Don Miguel, Falconiana y Agua Caliente-Montenegro de Bagaces; Santa Cecilia del Amparo y Cristo Rey de Los Chiles. Currently Aya is delivering water, house to house, and has placed tanks in those localities. As of the end of Feburary, AyA has delivered 44 million liters of drinking water.
