Congress approves blocking cellphone signals in prisons

With 50 votes in favor, the Legislative Assembly approved in the first reading a bill to block cellphone signals in prisons, as part of a reform to the General Telecommunications Law that will force telephone operators and telecommunications service providers to block their signals.

The text of the proposal indicates that companies must adopt and apply the procedures and technical solutions that are necessary to prevent the provision of wireless telecommunications services available to the public inside prisons.

It includes the integral care units, the juvenile criminal centers, and any other institutional care center of the National Penitentiary System. But it must be guaranteed that there will be no impact for the resident population and users of the areas surrounding those centers.
