Congress condemns dissolution of Venezuelan Assembly

The Costa Rican Legislative Assembly condemned the dissolution of the Venezuelan Parliament by the Supreme Court of Justice of that country.

The motion was approved with 27 votes in favor, but it had 12 against: 4 from the Citizen Action Party (PAC) and the legislative branch of Frente Amplio.

In view of the decision taken by the Supreme Court of Venezuela to deprive members of the Venezuelan Parliament of its immunity, which empowers President Nicolás Maduro to apply military justice and to take civil, economic, military, criminal, administrative, political, legal and social measures deemed pertinent and necessary against the legislators, this Legislative Assembly condemns the violation of the democratic regime and separation of powers derived from said sentence,”

indicates the motion.

Costa Rican legislators also requested the government to ask for the application of the Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) and demanded that the Government of Venezuela fully respect the principle of separation of powers.
