American Expatriate Costa Rica

Costa Rica adheres to the Committee for Digital Economy

Due to its progress in the telecommunications sector, the Policy Committee for Digital Economy of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) approved the accession of Costa Rica to this group.

In addition, this process highlighted how the country is taking advantage of technologies and the Internet to meet its public policy objectives.

Edwin Estrada, Vice Minister of Telecommunications, said that

the approval of the Policy Committee for Digital Economy recognizes that the country has a regulatory framework and public policies aligned with the principles of the OECD, as well as the capacity and willingness to continue strengthening the work mechanisms between the government, the private sector and the academy.”

This also implies great challenges for Costa Rica, since this organization makes recommendations in areas in which the country still needs to develop, implement, assess and measure compliance with the suggestions.

Alexander Mora, Minister of Foreign Trade and coordinator of the process of joining the OECD, was pleased by the accession. The evaluation of the committee included a diagnosis and recommendations on various topics, such as:
• Development of broadband
• Digital security risk management
• ICT and the environment
• Privacy
• Development of Internet policies
• Protection of children online
