Costa Rica has managed to reduce by 90% power generation from fossil fuels over the past two years, according to data from the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).
Strategic planning has allowed ICE to optimize water use in one of the driest years in decades. It was able to store water during rainy seasons for using it in times of drought.
Hydropower contributes with 75.29 percent of Costa Rica’s power production, followed by the geothermal source with 12.8 percent, and in third place came wind energy with a contribution of 10.08 percent
The news validates the international reputation of Costa Rica as a environmentally friendly country, according to Carlos Manuel Obregon, president of ICE. He added that an increase of renewable energies have allowed power bills to remain stable or to the low since July 2014.
Energy production increased 5.88 percent in 2015 and at the same time domestic consumption grew by 2.75 percent.
