Costa Rica gets lower score in the global index on corruption

The impact of the cementazo in the highest ranks of the State caused Costa Rica to get a lower score in the 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), for the first time in many years.

The country had a score of 56 (of 100), but it lost three points compared to 2017. It is the lowest score Costa Rica gets in the last four IPC reports prepared by the organization Transparency International.

In the 2018 report, Costa Rica ranked 48th out of 100 countries evaluated (it lost 10 positions, since last year it was 38). These figures come despite the progress made between 2012 and 2016 (it went from a score of 54 to 57).

This is far from the 66th position that the government of Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera (2014-2018) intended to reach at the end of his administration. That is, the goal set in the 2015-2018 National Development Plan was not met.

With data from this year, the country became one of the nations with the biggest decline along with Haiti, Congo, Yemen, Greece, East Timor, and the United States .

Of course, in American continent, Costa Rica has better indicators than all the other countries of Central and South America. Similarly, the report concludes that a significant group of countries had a decline in their indicators.

Denmark, with a score of 88, is the least corrupt country on the planet. In that ‘top 5’ stand out New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland.
