Costa Rica gives Nicaragua more time to pay for damages
December 16th was Nicaragua’s deadline to pay the $ 6 million asked by Costa Rica as compensation for environmental damage in Isla Portillos. However, the country decided to extend the period until December 30th, 2016 to address the issue.
Today, still with no response from northern neighbor, the Costa Rican authorities will give another week so that there is a resolution before submitting the application to the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ).
The Foreign Ministry gave the order to the Costa Rican Ambassador to the Netherlands, Sergio Ugalde, to negotiate with his Nicaraguan counterpart to reach an agreement. Until today, there has been no green light.
Given this, it was decided to give a few more days before sending the case to the Court.
The $ 6 million asked by Costa Rica compensation come from thorough analysis and studies by specialists in environmental matters.
If Nicaragua does not pay that amount and the case is brought to the ICJ, the judges will be the ones who determine the amount and the deadline to handing it over to the government.
