Next week, the issue of the $6 million compensation requested to Nicaragua for environmental damage to Calero Island would be greenlighted.
According to the Foreign Ministry, these days they are in the process of assessment documents by the country and they would be revealing the details next Monday.
Nicaraguans had until December 16th to pay the established amount. However, Costa Rica extended the deadline to December 30th to see if there was any positive response.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave the responsibility to the ambassador to the Netherlands, Sergio Ugalde, to negotiate the payment with his counterpart from Nicaragua, to avoid having to take the case back to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
On December 30th there was no resolution. The Foreign Ministry said that they waited a few extra days before making the decision to file the complaint before the ICJ. Now it is expected that next week there will be clarity on the situation.
