Costa Rica loses blood donors over unsubstantiated myths

The myths surrounding blood donation prevent people from saving lives.

Danny Cabezas, an attending physician at the National Blood Bank, said that people refuse to donate because they believe unsubstantiated myths that claim it makes people gain weight, get infections or spend the rest of the day feeling weak, among other things.

However, according to Cabezas, what makes people gain weight is the food they ingest after donating blood, and the instruments used for the extraction are completely personal, disposable and cannot be used in someone else; and finally, and adult has between 4 and 6 liters of blood, but only 470 milliliters (ml) are needed to save the life of 4 people.

The Blood Donor Day will be held on June, 14th. To be part of the initiative, visit blood banks in hospitals or the National Blood Bank in Zapote. For more information about the campaign, call 2280-9884.
