Costa Rica moves forward in cancer treatment

On August 3rd, Costa Rica will take an important step in the treatment of people diagnosed with cancer, with the opening of a new laboratory that runs tests to assess the effectiveness of different drugs on cancer cells, so that doctors can choose the best for each patient.

The test is called ATP – TCA and involves applying medication to the patient’s cancer cells to study their behavior, which would support the oncologist’s therapeutic decision.

More developed countries have been applying this test for 20 years, but Costa Rica will start doing so on August 3rd, as part of the Symposium on Personalized Cancer Therapy, to be held at the School of Microbiology of the University of Costa Rica (UCR).

Doctor Peter Andreotii, co-inventor of the ATP-TCA test, will participate in the activity.

Researchers and university professors emphasize the importance of this project, since it combines basic and applied science to customize the treatment of patients.

The symposium is a free activity, but it has a limited capacity, so participants can sign up at 2511-8602.
