Costa Rica recognizes Juan Guaidó as president of Venezuela

The national government recognized Juan Guaidó, president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, as the interim president of that country.

The announcement was made through the official Facebook and Twitter accounts of the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, who is on tour in Davos, Switzerland. Alvarado also called for new elections in that South American nation.

Costa Rica recognizes the proclamation of Mr. Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela. We advocate dialogue, peace, and new free elections,”

wrote the president.

On January 14th, the Costa Rican president said that this recognition was an issue that should be discussed with the foreign minister, Manuel Ventura.

Last Friday, Guaidó said that, protected by articles 233, 333 and 350 of the Constitution of Venezuela, and after affirming that Nicolás Maduro is a “usurper” of power, he assumed the interim presidency and the responsibility of calling for free elections.

In addition to Costa Rica, this decision was also adopted by the governments of the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. The secretary general of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, and the vice president of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights, Beatriz Becerra, also recognized Guiadó.
