The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) highlighted the high level of organization and transparency in the electoral process this Sunday, where Costa Ricans elected Citizen Action Party (PAC) candidate, Carlos Alvarado, as their president in the second round.
The observers praised the civic spirit shown during the election day and the speed with which the losing candidate, Fabricio Alvarado, acknowledged the results, without questioning the legality of the process.
The mission emphasized that the TSE demonstrated its high technical level, once again, by successfully organizing this process, and invited the institution to share and promote its technical advances and democratic culture with the rest of the countries of the region.
During its stay in the country, the OAS team met with the TSE magistrates, the two candidates, representatives of civil society and academics, to know their perspectives on the second round. On Sunday, the team toured voting centers in San José to observe the development of the voting. The Voting Receiving Boards opened on time and had all the essential materials. As for the integration of the tables, the assisting members were fundamental, since many of the persons designated by the political parties to act as board members did not show up.
The EOM also stressed that the efforts of the TSE to modernize the process of transmission of results allowed the president of the institution to give results of 90.62% of the minutes at 8:05 p.m. This gave certainty to the citizens, who had accurate and official information two hours after the election process was over.
