Costa Rica underwent radiological safety assessment

Costa Rica became the fifth Latin American country to undergo a voluntary assessment of occupational radiation protection, made by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The aim is to assess the security measures that protect those workers in the country who are exposed to radioactive sources.

Following the results, Costa Rica was ratified as one of the safest countries in the responsible management of radioactive equipment and sources.

We have found with great satisfaction that Costa Rica not only has the necessary regulations for the control and protection of personnel (…) but also met international standards in this area,”

said Alejandro Nader, an Uruguayan expert who led the mission of the IAEA in Costa Rica.

The evaluations were applied from December 12th to 20th to the Ministry of Health and the companies providing radiology services, public and private hospitals, and industries.

Maria Esther Anchía, Deputy Minister of Health, welcomed the results of this evaluation and also recognized that it was an opportunity for improvement.
