The signing of the Association Agreement between the United Kingdom and Central America (Aacru) will allow Costa Rica to maintain the preferential access conditions of its products to the British market.
This was reported by the British-Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce, which celebrated the signing of the agreement in Nicaragua, before the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union (EU).
We recognize the efforts of both governments to be able to guarantee the commercial exchange between both markets, with the least possible disruption. The agreement must comply with the corresponding process in the Legislative Assembly, a process that we will accompany to highlight the relevance of the British market for Costa Rican exporters and importers,”
said Kenneth Waugh, president of Brit Cham Costa Rica.
Nearly 10% of Costa Rican exports to the EU are destined for the United Kingdom, while 8% of EU imports come from the United Kingdom. More than 150 different Costa Rican products are exported to that country, which occupies the eleventh place in the list of Costa Rica’s main trading partners.
Data from the Promotora de Comercio Exterior de Costa Rica (Procomer) show that of the total of agricultural exports to the European Union in 2017, 6.5% went to the United Kingdom; where melon represented 13%, bananas 9%, pineapple 6% and cassava 5%.
The main products imported from the United Kingdom include whiskey, medicines, intermediate products of iron and steel, agricultural tractors, sheets and plastic plates, laboratory diagnostic reagents and binding preparations.
