Costa Rican company reuses containers and transforms them into storage units

Repurposing many items and products that were previously discarded has gained popularity in recent years. This type of practices arise from environmental awareness in companies, people, and organizations, which seek to mitigate the negative impact on the atmosphere.

Repurposing offers multiple advantages to the environment, such as the reduction of the huge gap between the consumption of resources and the generation of new waste. Also, this practice reduces air and water pollution generated by manufacturing processes.

However, the high production of waste in relation to its good management still has abysmal gaps. Plastic, electronics and steel waste are just some of the materials that, year after year, damage ecosystems and pollute the environment. According to data from the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), in 2016 alone there were 1,630 million metric tons of steel in the world, some 15 million more than in 2015. These high production rates are directly related to the amount of steel waste produced.

In order to reduce the carbon footprint and join the country goal of becoming carbon neutral, the company “Mi Bodega” implemented the restoration and repurpose of nearly 100 steel containers discarded by shipping companies, transforming them into mini warehouses or storage units.

This is a 100% national capital project located in Ciudad Colón, which rents storage units for companies or people who need to store their belongings, furniture, office supplies, among others. And, in addition to operating as an environmentally-friendly company, Mi Bodega offers various indirect jobs in the country.

Carolina Salazar, Administrative Coordinator of the project, explains that the initiative was born with the purpose of satisfying the great need for storage in the country. “In Costa Rica, houses and offices are getting smaller and the lack of space forces many to look for a space to store objects and inventory.”

Salazar explained that all the containers were painted with a special coating with thermal insulation to keep them cool and avoid the use of ventilation systems.

Luis Montero, Project Director, said that the campus has 98 13.6m2 by 27.6m2 hermetic stainless steel storage units with wide doors, and one of the main advantages is that renting these spaces is cheaper than renting traditional warehouses with the same dimensions.

The company also offers a security system 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It has surveillance by means of high technology cameras, as well as a perimeter alarm and access control.
