The latest report released by the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (IAFA) indicates that Costa Ricans are consuming more alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and crack than 5 years ago.

Alcohol remains the most consumed drug. It is estimated that 27.9% of the population actively drinks liquor, which means they drink at least once a month.

Only in the last year, the rate of new drinkers increased by 4.9%, most of them between 12 -19 years old.

One of the most significant increases occurred regarding marijuana. In 2010, 7 out of 100 men admitted to have used the drug at least once in their lives. By 2015 this proportion increased to 17 out of 100. In general, it is estimated that 17.7% of the population has used it.

Cocaine and crack also report an increase. Experimentation is the main reason for the use of these drugs, which means that it does not necessarily lead to addiction. Only 2% of the population has used any of them at least once in their lives.

About 16 thousand people were interviewed across the country. This is the fourth time that the IAFA makes a survey on drug use in the general population. The information is revealed every 5 years.
