Countries meet to discuss challenges of inclusion issues

This Wednesday was the first day of the International Congress on the Rights of People with Disabilities: Effective Inclusion, Urgent Action!

Representatives from countries of the Central American and Caribbean region are participating in the event.

The idea of the convention, which will extend for three days, is to raise a halt and demand concrete and urgent action, so that this population has an effective inclusion in all areas of society.

The congress will address issues faced by people with disabilities in countries where policies are in place to ensure inclusion.

Zulema Villalta, president of the National Council for the Elderly Person (CONAPAM), commented that everyone at this congress seeks to move from words to deeds, in terms of outstanding debts as well as persons with disabilities.

This Congress will also seek to incorporate national plans and public policies, as well as special actions. The idea is also to analyze and effectively promote the proposed policies in relevant areas.

Lizbeth Barrantes, Executive Director of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (CONAPDIS) said that almost nine million people with disabilities require joint work between countries.

Dedicating our work to defend the rights of almost nine million people represents a great responsibility. There are moments in the development of a society, where opinions of civil society and the state are the same, and that has allowed to establish laws, but inclusion is a decision that cannot be postponed,”

said Barrantes.
