The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will expand the technical and financial cooperation offered to the Costa Rican Directorate General of Migration, with the aim of strengthening its services to the public, given the increase in the number of refuge applications.
This was announced by the Director of Migration, Raquel Vargas, during the session of the Committee for Attention to Migratory Flows, in the Presidential House.
According to Vargas, Migración signed a Letter of Understanding with UNHCR, which will allow, in a first phase, to rent a building to assist the current flow of people. In addition, it allows them to hire 20 law professionals and 10 office workers.
The Deputy Minister of the Interior, Víctor Barrantes, explained that UNHCR assistance is important so that the migratory pressure does not affect the quality of services offered by Migration, both national and foreign.
The resources will be administered by UNHCR and the Immigration Affairs Directorate will be able to access them through the Memorandum of Understanding,”
said Barrantes.
The document signed last Thursday will have a term of two years and will be extended automatically for equal terms.
