Court buries electronic vote for 2018

The Electoral Tribunal ruled out electronic voting for the 2018 elections due to a lack of budget.

This is stated in a resolution from TSE magistrates, dated November 15th, in which a report from the Electoral Register and the Director of Technology strategy is presented.

The document was issued in July and authorities believe that

there is no economic feasibility for this project at least in the short and medium term, since there are other institutional priorities to allocate economic resources, so we recommend to postpone the project.”

When asked about the issue, Hector Fernández, director of the Electoral Registry, said the application of the system represents an investment of “tens of millions of dollars.”

Before the 2014 elections, the Electoral Tribunal discussed the possibility of starting the system but, once again, the lack of resources prevented it. In some polling stations a pilot plan to test the system was conducted.

In the second electoral round of that year, some volunteers described the system as

simple and friendly.”
