Court IV orders to measure the impact of agrochemicals on bees

The Constitutional Chamber ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) to conduct a scientific study on the effects of certain agrochemicals on health, the environment and honey-producing bees.

The magistrates resolved in favor a writ of amparo filed by José María Villalta, from Frente Amplio (FA). They said that the resolution seeks to improve agricultural practices, as well as to protect the food security of the population.

The study must be carried out within one year, from the notification of the sentence, in coordination with the State Phytosanitary Service, the Laboratory of Phytopathology and Biocontrollers of the School of Agronomy of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica and the Faculty of Agrifood Sciences of the University of Costa Rica.

According to the resolution, if serious risks to health, biodiversity or the environment are found

the corresponding measures must be taken to safeguard these constitutional assets.”

The decrease in bee species will have devastating effects on flora and agriculture worldwide. Therefore, we celebrate this first step to guarantee the protection of their populations and the fundamental pollination work they carry out. We are going to demand that MAG comply with the obligation to carry out the studies as soon as possible and that urgent measures be taken to protect the ecosystems,”

said Villalta.
