Daniel Ortega, president of Nicaragua, admitted that relations with Costa Rica have not returned to normal. However, he said that he wants to visit the country and meet president Luis Guillermo Solís.
Ortega, who was reelected in November, made these statements during the presentation of credentials of new ambassadors of Costa Rica, Russia and the European Union (EU).
According to the Nicaraguan leader, Costa Rica and Nicaragua have a close relationship on issues such as security, trade, the fight against drug trafficking and parliamentary exchange. In this last aspect, it can’t be ignored that a few days ago, some Costa Rican legislators visited Nicaragua.
Why not to talk? Talking about those issues that unite us, because they are more issues that unite us than issues that separate us,
declared Ortega.
A year ago, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) settled a territorial litigation between both countries. Nevertheless, it ordered Nicaragua to pay damages in Isla Calero, reaffirmed as Costa Rican property.
When consulted on the issue, Ortega indicated that his country would pay the compensation. However, according to him, they need to clarify some things.
The last time Ortega visited Costa Rica was at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), held in January 2015.
